This home is brought to us by the incredible design genius of the Seoul-based design studio Atelier 17. The studio aligns their work to greater community and social concerns. They, of course, prioritise the client's needs and wishes; but, at the same time they give due consideration to the surrounding community.

They try to suppress their own ego as the 'starchitect', instead concerning themselves with relationships. The various ingredients in their designs come together to establish a larger order. This focus on the components that work to create the whole to their approach of looking at the city: the micro establishes the macro.

Now let's take a look at one of their wonderful homes

The exterior

This home, constructed in 2010, has a bold street presence. It's formal arrangement deviates from the traditional home typology to morph some unique, atypical, and uber-contemporary.

The L-shape plan partly encloses a grassed courtyard area and the large opening, on the ground level, eloquently connects the interior and exterior of the home.

Numerous protrusions and recesses find a home of the facade, creating balconies and overhangs while also breaking up the sheer mass of the exterior.

The open plan interior

The interior resumes a more rectilinear and rational layout. It beautifully encapsulates many modern design principles: 'form (certainly) follows function'.

The open plan layout is bright and free-flowing; however, there are a number of devices which help to instill a sense of separation. One such example is the slight raise in level at the end of the room where the dining table resides. This is more poetic and sensual than functional, but effective nonetheless.

Furniture and furnishings

The designers display a penchant for modern furniture, incorporating replicas of classic designs throughout the space. Every piece of furniture and every furnishing has been carefully considered and selected. Ornamentation is eschewed in favour of a clean, streamlined interior.

The stair

Here the structural wall separating the stairwell and the greater living space is incised to leave only the critical mass remaining: structural beam and column support. Establishing a visual link between the stair volume and the living area also helps to enhance the connection between the lower level and the upper level.

The stair is simple and beautiful. The skeletal steel frame is finished white  topped with timber treads. Beneath the stair, low-level bookcases squeeze their way in to make use of a space that is difficult to occupy.

Back outside…

Now before we say adieu, let's step back outside and take one last look at the lovely garden, flanked by the creamy brick and masonry walls.

And how about that balcony! Looking over that garden at sunset wouldn't be a bad way to see the day slip away.
