Our small walls have big potential; they are the most underestimated design areas of the home, with too many people preoccupying themselves with what to do with the large walls. But actually, taking care of your small walls can take some of the pressure off the large walls, creating a bit more aesthetic balance. So homify has put together a use-guide with ways to unleash the small wall's possibilities.

The good news is that all of the things you can do with your small wall—and there are way more than just five—are, for the most part, pretty simple and inexpensive, because small walls make most things look, well, big. On this note, remember that your small wall is a natural highlighter so whatever you do in the small areas will be noticeable—choose wisely, but have fun!

1. Hang some warm materials

Putting up beautiful art is always a good idea, but art made of warm materials like cloth are especially great for small areas, as they create a sense of warmth and cosiness.

The good news is that textile wall hangings, as one of the oldest art forms, are in abundant supply, with so many different styles and rich colour palettes to choose from, so you are sure to find one that suits your wall area. Put up one large one to fill the whole space of pepper the space with three or four smaller ones.

2. Put up some hooks

This small wall idea is lovely because it is also functional. Plenty of us suffer from a lack of space--particularly storage space. So to kill two birds, get yourself a fabulous hook rack that matches the rest of the room's aesthetics.

Once you have installed your fashionable hook rack, you may not even care to put clothes or hats on it, but want to get a bit creative by using it to hang pictures or goofy knick knacks. Either way, anything goes.

3. Put in a herb garden

If you are one of those people who always wanted an herb garden, the small wall may be just the opportunity. And if you have never thought of an herb garden, there are good reasons to consider doing so, including the amount of money you would save on buying store-bought herbs, better tasting food and a more pleasantly fragrant home.

Boxes for herb growing can be found in home stores but are also simple to construct yourself, using basic plywood, though for more complex shapes like hexagonal boxes, we recommend consulting a manual of some kind.

4. Install an organiser unit

There are loads of nifty small wall boards available these days, and they act as great inspirers for people who want to DIY such organiser and shelving units. Turning your small wall into a small bar nook, with shelves full of whiskey and a magnet board for tools, is just one avant-garde twist on the traditional organiser board.

We recommend that if you want to go in the direction of using the small wall space for organising purposes, you allow yourself to get creative and do some research about what some other folks have done, as seen in this picture.

5. A pretty mirror

Mirrors are always great additions because they make things look bigger and add some silvery, shiny dimension to a wall. You can DIY your own frame easily enough with some shellac or wood glazes, and then make your small wall into a mini vanity area as shown in this photo, complete with a tiny table, some figurines, or a plant and some candles.

Whatever you decide to do with your small wall, hopefully this list has given you a bit of inspiration to get those wheels turning!
