It’s great to marvel at vast, opulent homes – often, that’s exactly what we do.  Equally, we like to showcase incredibly creative, sometimes even outlandish designs, but let’s not forget that there’s also a lot to be said for a simple, understated, but well-designed home.

With this in mind, today we’ll be touring a modest yet majestic home that merits credit not for its size or eye-catching creativity, but for its simplicity and elegance. Brought to us by home builders Kotori, this humble Japanese home lets its design do the talking.

Light and space

Upon entering the open-plan abode, it becomes clear how incredibly spacious the home is. It feels even more so thanks to the large glass patio doors that allow vast amounts of light into the home, and blur the line between outdoor and indoor space.

A natural environment

Progressing into the heart of the home brings the kitchen and dining area into view. The extensive use of wood throughout the home gives it a very natural feel, and this feeling is intensified by the natural light that streams through the patio doors. The way the various wooden beams intersect becomes a part of the home’s aesthetic, and serves to adorn the abode.

The home is modern in design, but very minimalist with two unassuming white counters delineating the kitchen area, and simple wall-mounted shelving for storage.

Spotlights scattered around the home ensue its well-lit at night, with a stylish spherical light fixture illuminating the dining table.

The cosy living room

The living room has a cosy, welcoming feel to it thanks to the log burning stove by the staircase, while the large grey sofa provides a comfortable place in which to relax. The room’s colours are well coordinated as the grey of the tiles behind the stove match with the sofa and carpet. The sleek, glass coffee table adds a little modern flair to the room.

A great place to hangout

Stepping outside we find an expansive wooden patio – a great place to relax and enjoy the outdoors thanks to the huge hammock hanging between the beams.

Looking in

Somehow a magical warmth has been created despite the home’s minimalist design. Standing in the garden and surveying the structure, we find ourselves gazing upon a simple home, but one that comes across as incredibly inviting; it appears bright and cosy, yet spacious within.
