A monochromatic colour palette isn't a bad idea in any home, but you should educate and inform yourself about where and how to apply a limited colour palette in your home. This rings especially true if your home is a bit smaller in size.

Black and white is timeless, classic and sophisticated—still holding a dominating force in both interior design and fashion runways. It's rare to find a specimen in the design world that never goes out of style—yet here we truly have one. There are six key steps to getting the most fashionable black and white home ever and none of the options are over-the-top, nor do they break the budget.

Everyone loves a great black and white colour palette—a monochromatic design concept has never been more in-trend!

1. Use black for the structural details

What we mean by structural details are baseboards, upper-moulding, window panes and interior architectural components like the glass and metal partition seen here. People tend to choose white as the primary wall colour, which means in order to create a greater sense of balance, accessorising details should be left to the black part of your palette.

2. Make sure you create balance

Balance is important in any part of your life, and your home is no excpcetion. Particularly when working with two colours, creating an even interior balance can be a bit tricky. The key is to keep a whiter upper part of the room and keep the owner half dark or black. This bathroom is a perfect example as the black floor and white tile/dry wall work well together with a mid-room black seam!

3. Consider creative tile work

If you're terrified to try painting in stark blacks and whites or if you won't dare do a creative pattern or some simple stripes, then consider tile work! Tiles are obviously great on floors, but don't forget how great they can work on walls as well!

A great geometric or checkered pattern are perfect for utility rooms like bathrooms, corridors, entry ways and laundry rooms!

4. Black and white is great for entryways

Drastic and with the greatest sense of contrast you can create, black and white are great for those wishing to make a dramatic statement.  Not only will black and white add a sense of grandeur to your lobby, entryway or corridor, but the exterior of your black and white home can also make a great first impression!

5. Combine different spaces

Some homeowners might attempt to get a little too creative and try alternating rooms—some more white, and some more black. Avoid design gimmicks like this—they're cheesy and juvenile. Instead, combine spaces where the blacks and whites are visible and make a statement, yet all seamlessly fit together. This black and white corridor, kitchen and tiny dinette set all work well together without anyone noticing or overthinking it!

6. Always leave your foundation white

Lastly, always leave your foundation primarily white. It will keep your home fresh, youthful, clean and efficient. Add black details, accessories and even appliances (mostly seen here) for a great monochromatic feature that's minimalist and modern.

As designers, we tend to avoid cheesy themes, trends and gimmicks—but trust us, black and white as a team will work well together until the end of time. Getting a black and white colour palette right might seem easy, but use this article to get a better, general sense of what to do!
