You would think that the average American family house would be quite standard; a few bedrooms, a nice living room and a bathroom. Usually, they would be functional but dull cookie-cutter copies of other houses in the neighbourhood with nothing remarkable or anything very unique about them (except for the family dwelling inside, of course).

Texas-based architects Hugh Jefferson Randolph Architects have created an incredible home for a family. Inside, it has all the essentials and then some. This home is a fascinating labyrinth of quirks and twists in its design and decoration, and it dares to be different in its use of space and design. We adore it and we know you will too. Let's have a peek!

Humble living room

This is everything a living room should be: cosy, welcoming, humble and relaxing. This colour scheme is ultimately relaxing; the natural timber colour compliments that of the exposed bricks and the soft vintage rug. A wall-mounted TV provides entertainment and allows room beneath for a beautiful, deep-brown piano for practicing or gawking at with your jaw dropped to the floor (like us). The fireplace can be decorative in the warmer months of the year, but gives the gift of heat when it’s colder and adds extra cosiness, especially when the whole family is sat around it. Chairs and sofas are spread out around the central coffee table, which holds a houseplant (and probably many cups of tea!).

Spacious hallways

We are loving the timber walls against the solid black flooring! Both are easy to clean and dust, which is great if there’s pet hair everywhere. The corridor is wide and feels airy and spacious, with double doors into the next room. It just has so much space – a perfect home for a family.

Delightful dining

Have you ever seen a dining room as gorgeously mis-matched as this one? The designers have used a diverse range of seating including a vintage-look bench, classic chairs and two chairs with a sleek, modern design for each head of the stately dining table. Black wooden flooring isn’t often used, but it is truly effective here against the bright white walls, the exposed beams and all of that natural light flooding into the room!

Marvellous family kitchen

Wow… Where to start with this wonderfully modern kitchen? The largely black and white colour scheme means it’s always bright, reflecting the light from the large windows. The chunky kitchen island in the middle of the room adds an extra dimension to the room; it gives more space to prepare food on its marble worktop and more storage space underneath. We have especially fallen in love with the decorative wall behind the oven fan as it brings even more energy to the home.

Bright bathroom

A family bathroom should be spacious and functional. Well, the architects have absolutely nailed it in their Palma Plaza house! It’s creatively tiled in different motifs and patterns and exudes a cheery ‘Good morning, sunshine!’ mood for when you need it. For the adults of the household, it’s modern and chic, with a choice of two sinks built into the floating unit. The unit itself is full of drawers, cupboards and shelves for everything you could possibly need to store in the bathroom.

Simply stylish

There is a kaleidoscope of different styles incorporated within this home. We can see elements inspired from minimalist homes, classic furniture, eclectic and rustic décor and, of course, the modern touches for everyday life. With such a mix, it is difficult to make a house so elegant – but, obviously, they accomplished it!

Hidden office nook

Finally, we come to the creative nook beneath the staircase! No one should ever believe that there isn't enough space in the house for a study. Not when you can use all of that wasted space beneath the staircase. The architects converted the space into a small office space, which includes space for shelves and a filing cabinet under the desk. It's like a little surprise in the house!
