When one thinks of a ‘family’ home, words like ‘traditional’ and ‘conservative’ tend to spring to mind, but in reality, a home can be unconventional and exciting while still meetings all the needs of a modern family.

Today we’re heading to Milan, Italy, to tour a beautiful, modern family home. The architects have converted an old loft into a striking apartment of bold colours, designed with the needs of the family in mind. Let’s take a look…

Heading straight to the top

We begin out tour in the attic, which has been transformed into an astonishing open-plan kitchen, living room and dining area.

Spacious and strikingly modern, the area is complete with access to the large terrace allowing the family to soak up some of that Italian sunshine.

Living large

Not a bad living space right? The ample, open-plan space contrasts a dark wooden floor with the bright white beans overhead, while pastel pink and green frame the room at either side.

The art adorning the wall on the right side of the room is a particularly nice touch, along with the green shelving that blends the colour scheme together.

Oodles of kitchen space

The amount of space in the kitchen is commendable, with a formidable breakfast bar that serves to define the kitchen area. The stove incorporated into the breakfast bar faces the seating and dining table, allowing the chef to continue a conversation while cooking.

The area is well lit, with natural light no less, thanks to the well-spaced skylights overhead.

You’re not ready for the staircase

The various areas of the home were exploited their fullest, for example, the least illuminated area was designated as the site of the free-standing staircase

This is no ordinary staircase, as it’s been painted in a striking blood red.

Let’s head down to the living room

After heading down the stairs we find ourselves in the living room. This vast, open space is dominated by a corner sofa that ensures seating for the whole family.

The room is largely comprised of neutral and lighter colours that form a magnificent contrast to the red wall to our left.

Baby-blue

Here we find ourselves in one of the children’s bedrooms, brightly decorated in orange and blue. The large windows, white ceilings and baby blue walls ensure a bright and cheerful space.

Plenty of bath room

Each of the three bedrooms has a closet and a private bathroom. The bewildering blue bathroom pictured above is one of two wonderfully whimsical wash rooms for the children.
