What can I possible do with this space? is that most people are asking themselves when decorating their alcove. Whether they're small, large, load-bearing, or non-load bearing are all factors to be considered in your quest of what to do with them.

Most homeowners opt to use them as extra storage space, some opt for shelving units. We want you to know that the possibilties are endless and of course, depending on what room you find your alcove in, can irrevocably change their function. Below are several great ideas for alcove design to get you started in the right direction!

Add bookshelves

Floor to ceiling bookshelves are one of the most obvious design choices for alcoves. If you find your alcove in your living room, dining room or reading nook, this is the easiest and most cohesive option. Here, the alcove lay between the dining room and living room areas, making the floor to ceiling bookshelves a perfect transition space!

For exposed shelving and storage

For kitchen-based alcoves, why not add some modernised exposed shelving units instead of cabinets? If the alcove is big enough it can fully replace cabinets, if not, then simply use the alcove to highlight your favourite dishes and dining platters in an aclectic manner.

A more private bed

Studio apartments and smaller apartments often lack a proper bedroom space. If your bed fits within in alcove, why not place it there for a proper (and more private) bedroom space? Here, there was even enough leftover room for a tiny shelf, perfect for a lamp, some pictures and an a proper alarm clock.

A proper workspace

This alcove is a typical one: It's small and has an odd-angled top. This is the kind of alcove that leaves you scratching your head! The simplest solution is to place two or three exposed shelves in the top area for books, school supplies, etc; and place a larger plank of wood in the lower half that doubles as a great desk or craft table! Simply add a great modern chair and you're finished.

Shelves flanking a fireplace

These alcoves look as though they're purposely placed here to flank the fireplace—this is a common and wonderful design technique to make the fireplace pop. With a few exposed shelves on the top, and covered cabinet areas on the bottom, you have both place for delicate decor and objects and ample storage!

Simply add wallpaper

Find yourself with an alcove in an odd place, and seemingly too small for any design? Simply add some great wall paper and call it a day! This fantastic retro wall paper plays nicely with the vintage-style tiles and turns the space from drab to fantastic! Use it for family portraits, your favourite books or a nice lamp!

We hope you're looking at your alcoves now with fresh eyes—we certainly are! And remember, for more great alcove design (and other design techniques) for odd spaces, homify is here to help!
