Nobody ever said being a homeowner was easy. With such a big space comes great responsibility, and not just with appearance. We're talking about functional upkeep, too. 

In order to make sure your home is up and running the way it should be, there are certain things you need to keep an eye on. So we made this list of things that the clever homeowner does once a year to keep things in tip-top shape. 

Take a look and make sure you're checking all the things you need to!

1. Make sure you're getting the best deal

By reviewing your building's insurance policy

2. Drain and refill the hot water tank

This will prevent sediment buildup in the pipes.

3. Clean vents and ducts

Dryer vents and ducts need to be cleaned in order to prevent lint buildup. Cleaning it will keep your machine running the way it was meant to.

4. Update your inventory

This will be beneficial for your insurance.

5. Inspect the roof

Check for things like broken tiles before they get worse and cause bigger home problems.

6. Clear the gutters

This will prevent blockages that make water overflow into your home.

7. Check your foundation

Look for wall and floor cracks and keep track of them. You want to make note if they get any bigger.

8. Check for water leaks

This will prevent long-time leaks from damaging stone or woodwork.

9. Clean out and organise the garage

Make it a functional workspace, and better yet, you might find a hidden treasure to sell.

10. The outside drains

Outside drains also need to be checked for blockages to ensure good flow.

Re-putty the seals if they're cracking, or replace the glass if it's broken.

12. Keep an eye on your trees

Check if they need trimming or support to keep them healthy.

13. Check for mould

Check for household mould to prevent sickness and foundation problems.

14. Clear the pantry

Check the expiry dates on all of your goods in the pantry and make room for fresher ingredients.

15. Throw out old medicine and lotion

It's funny how we tend to look this over and keep things way past their due date.
