We know it isn't always a cake walk to design and furnish a home. We also know that there are just too many rules and guidelines out there to be aware of while doing so. So that's why we've decided to make it a little easier for you with this article.

We've put together 14 common mistakes you can avoid when completing the building block of new design–painting the walls. The most basic task unfortunately isn't the simplest, so we've outlined the process and highlighted a few key areas of improvement.

So before you put that roller to the wall, take a break and see what mistakes you can avoid!

1. Skipping prep

First thing's first: you cannot skip the preparation stage before painting your wall, or you're off to a really bad start. Although it's tedious and time-consuming, you need to sand the walls and clear them of all forms of dust and debris.

2. Covering imperfections

Holes, cracks, and other imperfections in the wall should be addressed before you start grinding, because otherwise you will have to cover the wall with many coats of paint… and then grind again to solve the problem.

3. Too much texture

Textures that are too complicated or involve lots of layers and mixed surfaces can become a tedious design element in your home.

4. Dull shades

Shades that are too dull or monotonous throughout the home can disguise any architectural value, thereby creating a boring space.

5. Matching without thinking

Sometimes you decide to put two colours together simply because you like them. However, this tactic doesn't always play out well. Think before you paint. Buy colour swatches, place them next to each other before committing to covering the entire wall. The only time it's okay to paint a wall without thinking about the colour is if you're painting your walls white. And the only reason that's okay is because of the versatility of white–anything will match with it, which is why it's a safe choice.

6. Artistic license

If you have a sudden rush of inspiration and the desire to do something crazy on the walls, consider how you imagine the room a year from now. Would you still want to live in a room with graffiti all over the walls? Only after answering this question can you decide if this is the right path for you.

7. Too intense

Some colours may seem fascinating and delightful for the first few months, but be careful with colours that are too intense. They might start to tire you out later on.

8. Incorrect optical illusions

Painting the areas of the wall that are supposed to be highlighted in a dark colour will result in an incorrect and confusing layout. When ceilings are slanted, like this one here, it's best to keep those shades lighter than the walls.

9. Accents

Remember, you don't have to stick to one uniform colour throughout the home. Accent walls are great ways to add splashes of colour without overpowering the space.

10. Contrast

When choosing graphics, especially in a large format, you need to pay attention to maintaining a proper balance so the design isn't too powerful or distracting.

11. Visuals

Avoid painting on random images that don't fit with the rest of the interior.

12. Dark colours

Dark colours absorb light and can make your interior seem grim. Exercise caution when using darker shades!

13. Painting with sponges

Although it was extremely popular in the 90s, this trend has no place on the list of popular trends for 2017. It needs to be left in the past and never revisited!

14. Allegorical themes

Sometimes we paint the nursery with an allegorical theme, but this isn't the best idea for other rooms in the home.
