There's nothing more romantic than a timber country cottage. Built from beautiful wood to match the gorgeous surroundings, they are classic yet timeless, and that's why today we're going to take a look at some absolutely magnificent examples. Whether you're talking tiny log cabins for winter retreats, expansive mansions on the prairie, or contemporary homes that set trends and push boundaries, wooden homes will always be a favourite.

The homes we'll explore today come from each of these categories and more. There's really no limit to what's possible with timber, it's one of the most versatile materials around for home construction as it's sturdy and reliable, but also imbued with a natural beauty due to organic variation in colour and grain. So if you're looking for inspiration to build your dream home, we're sure you're going to find it right here, because these projects are truly amazing.

1. Humble but impressive

This home is elegant in its simplicity, taking inspiration from tradition to build something familiar but brand new. The design is incredibly sturdy, built from horizontal slats, with a classic pitched roof. The tiled roof is another throwback, and the dark grey looks great against the light timber, creating an interesting contrast of shades. And with the roof protruding above the terrace you can enjoy that incredible weather all day long.

2. Winter wonderland

This absolutely spectacular house is is the stuff of dreams. The foundations are built from huge logs anchored by stone to maintain balance, with smaller logs forming the main structure. With a really interesting layout that includes several outdoor areas and an inner courtyard, the building is sprawling, but still cosy due to the comforting timber aesthetic.

3. A classic log cabin

This chocolate coloured log cabin shows just how many variables are available in hue and colour for timber homes. There are some special considerations to take into account when using wood, as it as an organic material that changes in response climatic conditions. Firstly it's crucial that that there is enough ventilation to prevent moisture from accumulating, which will quickly attract mould. Secondly any finish, be it paint or any other protective applications, will need to be checked and reapplied every few years.

4. Where rustic meets modern

This is a really unique idea, the cosy comfort of a classic log cabin for the bottom floor with an ultra-contemporary top floor with all of the modern conveniences. This really is the best of both worlds! The upper floor balcony features really impressive recessed lighting following the pitch of the roof, making this country getaway trendy, yet classic.

5. A blend of meterials

This incredible home features a blend of natural materials that look fantastic in combination, with a stone foundation providing a sturdy base for the gorgeous wooden home on top. With a classic terrace featuring ornate banisters and a pagoda in the garden this house speaks to the luxury of simpler times.

6. A minimalist twist

This minimalist interpretation of the country home is defined by straight lines and simple geometric patterns, from the rectangular frame to the vertical slats, and even the metal handrail for the terrace. Varied hues of wood are used to give the facade depth, with the lighting bringing out different shades from the natural colours. While the wood bonds this home to tradition, the huge front windows and sleek design give it a decidedly 21st century feel.

7. A country mansion

This idyllic scene of lush green grass and spring flowers is perfectly complemented by this enormous, but still homely wooden mansion. Again we find an updated version of a classic style, with huge front windows that follow the pitch of the roof flooding the interior with sunlight, while an expansive terrace on every corner of the home provides shade.

8. A mountain escape

This private home features mountains on one side, and sea views on the other, making this a magical retreat from urban life. We find another use of stone foundations in order to build this home on level ground. Because timber shrinks and swells it's dangerous to use concrete or stone within the structure, but it can provide a reliable base so that the home doesn't sink into the earth, or require constant maintenance around the foundations. The design is exquisite, with fantastic little details on the roof, and in the structure combining for a balanced yet unorthodox design.

9. A stunning prefab

This is a prefabricated home, meaning it is delivered to the site in pieces that are assembled on sight. It's a convenient and cost effective approach to building a new home, and as you can see it's impossible to tell the difference from a traditional build. This structure has a really unique interplay of interior and exterior areas, blurring the two with a covered terrace, and full wall windows. The design is simple, and perfect for lovers of tiny homes!

10. Cutting edge design

We finish our tour with a design that has its eyes firmly set on the future. The avant-garde approach of the architects has resulted in a truly unique home, with a two storey living area, a stunning terrace, and access to the flat roof. We see more use of the thin slats that are popular in modern designs, this time used in a variety of angles, horizontal, vertical, and diagonal, while full wall windows invite you into the cosy interior!

Sometimes you have to stick with the classics, and regardless of where architecture goes next timber houses will always have a special place in our hearts. For something a little different check out these modern apartments!
