Thanks to furniture superstore IKEA, Scandinavia is almost synonymous with interior design. However, well before flat pack furniture became a common commodity the Scandinavian style of simplicity, functionality and minimalism infused with aesthetic quality had already come into being, and it remains popular today as a distinct style of décor.

A picturesque seaside setting is almost universally sought after, as a holiday destination, or even better as a place we can make our home. Barcelona is beautiful city in Spain’s northeast that boasts a position as the country’s second most populous urban area – as well as the sixth most populous in Europe—and a location on the Mediterranean coast making it an incredibly attractive city in which to live.

Today we’re taking a look at a Barcelona apartment infused with Scandinavian style. Combing one of northern Europe’s most successful cultural exports with southern Europe’s idyllic settings has to be a recipe for success, so let’s take a look at what the architects have done…

A simple living room of space and light

The minimalist ethos of Scandinavian style is very present in the living room, emphasising the space. When combined with the expansive glass doors leading to the balcony, sheer curtains and light wooden tones of the floor the effect is to create a bright, open room filled with natural light.

A living room that exudes comfort

Despite the minimalist elements of the design the room is far from cold or purely utilitarian. The light, neutral colour scheme of the living room combined with the abundance of textiles creates a very comfortable atmosphere.

Elegant in its simplicity

The dining room is combined with the living in one, open-plan area. The simple but attractive wooden table fits perfectly into the space on one side of the room, and a doorway serves as a natural diving point that separates the dining area from the living room; which is denoted by an incredibly eye-catching rug that imbues the room with character.

The potted plants are a particularly nice touch; infusing the room with a touch of vibrant colour while giving the room a more natural feel.

Conveying comfort

The bedroom’s décor conveys comfort thanks once again to the textiles scattered around the place, such as the upholstered headboard and wicker basket to the right of the room.

Impeccable attention to detail

The night stands epitomise the apartment’s brilliance, and to some extent Scandinavian style as a whole, as they’re so perfectly functional – providing storage that doesn’t encroach on space while being tailored to the room’s exact dimensions – as well as being embellished with just the right accents to give them character and aesthetic appeal.

A multi-functional space

The home’s guest bedroom is furnished with the same ergonomic efficiency and comfort as the living room and bedroom, with the added benefit of being a versatile space that could be used for quiet reading or working thanks to the comfortable sofa and abundance of natural light.

Stunning sea views

The property’s location becomes an integral part of the apartment’s charm thanks to the balcony boasting a beautiful view of the Mediterranean Sea.

A sublime space to entertain guests

Turning to face the other side of the balcony brings the city into view, as well as the delightful sofa-style seating and coffee table that make this sunny little spot the perfect place to entertain guests.
