Urban gardens are usually small and often have space constraints, but if you know how to optimize garden space by planting the right way then you can actually have a lot of plants in a small garden. In this idea guide, we are going to discuss some tips about how to plant herbs in an urban garden.

Let's check out some of these ideas shall we? We hope you will find some inspiration here to start your own herb garden at home.

Make use of unwanted things

Most homes actually have a lot of unwanted things lying around, so this is your chance to finally make use of all those random things you've been storing. You can use plastic bottles, containers, or even an old shoe to plant herbs. Pictured here, we see pipe connectors being used as planters for herbs. Herbs are usually small plants, so your planters don't have to be very big.

Assess your space constraints

Assess your space constraints at home. Most urban gardens tend to be small, so learn to make the most out of the space that you have, but be realistic about how much you can grow in your garden. Herbs are usually small plants and don't take up a lot of space, hence they are a good choice for an urban garden.

Plant vertically to save space

Plant your herbs vertically to save space. You can mount wooden boxes to the wall as pictured here, or you can use pallets as planters. Here we see the planters being mounted onto a wall painted with chalk paint. This is a great idea for beginners as you can write the name of the herbs you planted on the wall.

Spread out your herb garden

If you don't have enough space in the garden outside, you can also grow some herbs inside the house, in the kitchen. This is also more convenient as you don't have to go outside to get the herbs for cooking. Pictured here, you see a simple planter being used to plant some herbs in the garden. Make sure the spot you choose has some exposure to sunlight. If there is no space in the kitchen, choose another place inside the house with some sunlight, like a windowsill.

Install shelving to store the cut herbs

Install shelving in your kitchen to store the cut herbs so that you can easily access it when you are cooking. Harvesting the herbs right away when they are fully grown helps them grow more and also makes space for planting more herbs. Pictured here we some nice breathable boxes that can be used to store vegetables or herbs in the kitchen. This shelving unit for the kitchen is designed by Friday Project, designers based in Amsterdam and Italy. It is interesting as it has many different types of storage options.

Design some comfortable seating around the garden

Finally, make your garden a cozy place to relax by designing some comfortable seating around the garden. Pictured here, we can see that pallets are being used to create a comfortable seating area. Throw some cushions in and you have a cozy spot in the garden to hang out.
