Guided by the design hand of Architecture firm Arcadi Pla Masmiquel, the house 'El Bosquet' underwent an intensive restoration. Deep in the incredible natural surrounds of 'La Vall de Riu' in Catalonia, the home lay latent; realising its incredible potential, the architects rearranged the space and the stone walls were reinforced. The external elevations were altered by the addition of new windows, framing the stunning landscape.

Intrigued? You should be. Let's look closer…

Within the landscape

The beautiful stone walls appear as an innate part of the landscape, the gentle pitch of the roof mimicking the undulations of the hillside. The new incisions that have been cut into the facade also attain an organic quality, varying in size and location.

There is an order and finesse in the arrangement that somehow manages to feel unintentional. Some exist as simple framed windows, others become protrusions housing balconies. The structure is beautifully at place in its context.

A section through the space

This cross section gives us a sense of the spatial arrangement over the two levels. A lower level navigates the change in level, nestling into the earth on two sides and opening out to receive moments of natural light on the other two faces.

Above, the main living and social spaces of the home find each other. A lowered flat ceiling encloses the space and is clad in the same timber that wraps down the walls. A central fireplace and adjoining shelving unit creates a partial height barrier between the various spaces.

The bedroom beneath

Here, we can see the incredible lower level. Hunkered into the ground, the stone walls are left exposed, as is the concrete form-work of the floor above.

This room has been allocated as the sleeping quarters—and what a strong space of removal and retreat it offers. One is offered an escape that feels secure and sheltered from the world outside. For more inspiration on all things repose, take a look at these bedroom examples!

Dining for a dozen

The kitchen island morphs into a side bench for the incredibly long dining table—you could host a banquet here! The social nature of the space is immediately asserted. Everything is timber—the ceiling lining, the wall linings, the window framing, the kitchen cabinetry and the furniture. One of the few interruptions to the timber oasis is the lush greenery views through the window—bliss.

Views, views, views

These windows frame the bright hues of the incredible vistas that one might mistake for a Monet before gaining full focus. Located with different sill and head heights, they have been placed with the utmost consideration to take full advantage of the most delightful moments.
