If you want to install a modern and practical kitchen, you will not only create a basis for a functional and organized cooking atmosphere, but you will also treat yourself to a very special space that can score points with you and your guests from a visual standpoint. In addition to an attractive design, which not only meets the current trends but also fits to your own taste, you should set up and plan your kitchen with a few things in mind. A comprehensible order to planning plays an important role in any design and allows you to take full advantage of your available space.

That’s why homify has put together this comprehensive list of things to pay attention to when planning a kitchen, so you don’t have to feel like you’re going about it all on your own or shooting in the dark. Keep reading to find out more!

Make arrangements

Whether you decide on an American, Asian, modern, or country style kitchen, it is always best to have a plan first and to make mental arrangements of how your kitchen will look. It is particularly useful to first install the large appliances you have planned for your kitchen, and also to outfit any furniture you might like before you work your way down to the smaller things like decorative elements.

We also recommend making a small sketch of how your major equipment will look and fit into your design so that you have a picture of what your new kitchen will look like. After your essentials like the stove, fridge, and oven have found their place, your other equipment can expand step by step.

Equipment

How and which items exactly fit in your kitchen is, of course, dependent on your personal taste and your expectations of your particular cooking and baking skills. Comfort aspects also play a major role in this context. A stove, oven, and a refrigerator are for most people an obvious necessity, belonging to the absolute basics in the kitchen. The use of a dishwasher, on the other hand, or even a microwave differs from homeowner to homeowner. Many people are happy enough washing dishes by hand or heating up food in either the oven or on the stove top.

If you’re a busy working person, chances are you might want to invest in a microwave so that you can come home after a busy day at work and heat up a small meal for yourself. And hey, you may not even have the time or energy to wash your dishes by hand, so a dishwasher in this case would not be a bad idea either, especially if you have a large family.

Scheduling, delivery, and construction

Scheduling is another important factor in kitchen planning, or planning the redesign of any room, really. You need to have a set plan as to when things will happen. You obviously can't have the delivery men bring you your new kitchen equipment while you are still trying to install new flooring, so of course, if you are completely demolishing, rebuilding, and redesigning your kitchen, you'll want your delivery date to be set after all of the construction is finished.

But once you have shopped around for the equipment you absolutely need, along with any other pieces of equipment that just might make your personal lifestyle better, you should purchase the equipment and schedule the delivery as soon as you can. Then, once the equipment arrives, you can place it in the appropriate places.

Wall designs

Bright tiles and white wallpaper in the kitchen look beautiful, but you run the risk of making your new kitchen look dirty quite quickly with colours that are so easily soiled. As a more practical alternative, the use of stone or brick on walls is recommended. Whether it is artificial stone or brick, the natural look in the kitchen gives it an exceptionally cosy ambiance. Stone and brick are great decorating options for the rustic interior.

Of course, a darker or patterned tile backsplash is also a smart option, as the darker colours will hide any splashes, and they provide a nice contrast to stone or brick. A darker or patterned tile backsplash works just as well in modern kitchens as well as in rustic ones.

Floor design

Style-conscious people design the flooring in the kitchen to match the wall style, especially with regard to colour. As we can see in this image, classic dark brown parquet flooring complements red brick very well. If you have a patterned wall, however, you should consider lighter flooring options, such as a timber hard wood, a light coloured tile, or even concrete. Concrete is becoming an increasingly popular flooring option because of its durability, easy maintenance, and style. It is mainly used in professional kitchens at restaurants, so you know concrete in your home would serve just as well.

Furnishing the dining area

If you have an open plan kitchen, or simply a kitchen with enough space for a dining area, you should definitely take full advantage of that and include a table in the kitchen area. Open plan kitchens allow whoever is cooking to still socialise with friends and family waiting on meals in the other rooms, as there are no walls or barriers blocking communication. So when furnishing the dining area, especially one that is in the same area as the kitchen, make sure your table and chair set-up matches the style of the kitchen.

Take this image, for example. The modern, minimalist décor calls for an equally modern dining room table. Sleek wooden furniture like this is the perfect fit for this kitchen, and the simple chairs add to the minimalist design. Victorian style ornate chairs would be very out of place in this kitchen, so you always want to make sure your styles coordinate.
