There shouldn't be any questions as to why you would want to make your bedroom cosy. Typically, one thinks about their bedroom as their one, true personal sanctuary in their home. Of course, your whole home should be yoursanctuary, but your bedroom offers a sense of privacy and intimacy that no other room in your home ever will.

That being said, creating this environment can be harder than you think—picking the right colour scheme, textiles and accessories and making sure they all work together to create a comfortable harmony is a pretty tall order!

Below we have helped you by narrowing your choices and considerations down to six important items! From proper bedding to plush textiles and soft rugs—we have the perfect look for you!

Flowing curtains

Almost every bedroom has a window, or at least should have a window according to most building and zoning codes. So assuming you have a window (and it doesn't matter how big or small,) you should cover it with semi-transparent sheers, rather than solid curtains or blinds.

For a dramatic effect, hang sheer drapes from the ceiling and let them fall all the way to the floor, rather than hanging them from the top of the window to the bottom of the window. These stark white curtains in this example are hung in a similar manner and are great because the cream canopy curtains on the bed offer a subtle contrast to the curtains on the window! It's always okay to use differentiating shades of pale neutrals to create a cosy bedroom atmosphere.

Bedding

The best part about any bedroom is the choice you get to make regarding your bedding. This is one of the most personal decisions you can make regarding both your home and your bedroom and it should be a decision you make wisely, with both quality and design in mind.

Consider feather beds, comforters and pillows of the highest quality for a great nights sleep every night.  As for bedding, also choose high-quality, high thread count cotton or cotton mix that will only become softer and better the more your wash it.

Tip: You should be washing your bedding at least every week to keep it properly clean!

Even this all-white bedding scheme screams cosiness and makes you want to hop right in and take a nap!

Lighting

To set the mood in your new cosy bedroom, we will give you this one important piece of advice: Let all the natural light in! Choose sheers and curtains that offer privacy, yet provide the most natural light as possible to keep your space fresh on those cold, rainy days when you just want to stay in bed all day and read or watch movies.

This room uses a pastel colour scheme, and the combination of both natural and artificial light is nearly perfect. The three lantern lights above the wonderful candle-lit fireplace give off just enough light as to notice the difference, yet they don't overpower the essence of the room. Remember, keep things simple!

Soft/plush textiles

You absolutely can't forget the soft and plush textiles! This should include pillows, throws, blankets and your rug. This example we've provided shows just how versatile your selection can be! The great part about plush textiles is that everything should look comfortable - it doesn't all have to match with colour schemes and styles!  Sometimes the comfortability of things can be why they go together!

Microfibre throws, animal skin throws and decadent pillows is where your mind should be when selecting such items!

The right rug

A bedroom rug is a must for keeping your feet warm upon first touch in the morning—but it is also necessary to pull everything in your room together. Take this room for example; this great, high-pile off-white rug stretches from the long curtains, to the corner reading chair, all the way to the farthest night stand.  It literally connects all the major furnishings and areas of the room together, and is far better on cold mornings than an exposed hard floor wood.

If larger rugs aren't your taste, that's ok too. Consider smaller, matching rugs, or great mix-matching rugs for different areas of your bedroom. Two for both sides of your bed and maybe one more on the area you tend to get dressed in, in front of the mirror or dresser. To keep the cosiness feeling there, we suggest you stick with high-pile rugs within a neutral colour palette that can easily work with any tastes!

Personal accessories

For that last, personal touch to make your bedroom as cosy as it can be, think about the addition of personal accessories. This should include an amalgamation of delicate items from family heirloom collections, flea market finds and gifts and items from friends.

The bedroom dresser in this example is rather stark and modular, yet the existence of a plush, high-pile rug in combination with the candle holders, picture frames and unique sculptures makes it a highly personal space. This space is undoubtedly for your pleasure only, but for those guests visiting your private space should be able to get a good glimpse into your life and the things you love by looking at these tiny areas accessorised with things you love!
