Your child's room should be a wonderful escape of daily troubles and routine—it should promote playing, boost creative thinking and allow your child to interact with objects in order to form a good sense of the world around them.  This can include toys, books, graphic posters and games—but we really want you to think about the things you surround your children with, and the environment you wish to create for them.

A playful children's room isn't just stuffed with toys and books at their disposal, but is a strategic wonderland of intriguing objects. Whether it be a whimsical bed, unique items from various places, or beautiful, intricate wall art, your child should be able to use everything placed in their room.

Promoting play time is a healthy use of time and, when done correctly, is not pointless in the child's development from an incredibly early age. We have developed an ideabook to aid you in the process of creating a children's room that can grow as they grow and help them to learn the precarious elements of a life awaiting!

A whimsical bed

We all know that bed time can be a forbidding time for children. So, what better way to make it better than a whimsical, beautiful bed? Most parents will say that their reason for not purchasing such a bed is both cost and safety concerns, but worry not! A bed like this can be assembled in kits or left to the professionals if safety is a concern.

It's always ideal, specifically when creating bunk beds, that you make sure the height is just right. The real safety concern with bunks is someone falling from the top—so keep the height reasonable depending on the age of your children.

Bunk beds can be designed and styled based on anything, from the theme of the room to the interests of your child—they're incredibly versatile! A whimsical bed can double as a play pen for your chilldren to rummage around in—nothing sounds more fun!

Shelving for success

If you want to know how highly we think of shelving in your home, check out this ideabook—trust us, we can't get enough! Shelving in a children's room provides easy access to each and every item you and your children might want. This example demonstrates the amazing ability of shelves to differentiate between items your children should have access to, and those they shouldn't.

We suggest that you keep more expensive toys or sentimental family items on upper-shelves, out of reach of your children. Stack lower shelves with toys, books and anything else that your child might play with during the day.  Shelves are easy for clean-up, accessibility and for teaching children that they have the ability to help at clean-up time as well.

Wall art

One temporary and cost-effective way of adding colour and playfulness to your child's room is through wall art! Wall art can vary in style, colour, and size, and it's also great for a DIY project!

Some families tend to opt for more permanent wall art where you or a professional sketch a design, figure out the dimensions of the room and paint with regular wall colours. This can be great if you want to promote creativity in your home—and it's even better to incorporate your child's artistic abilities and have them join in the fun too!

This large sketch design displays the ability of wall art to be incredibly subjective, and it doesn't always have to include huge amounts of colour and texture to bring something beautiful into the room. For a slightly easier project, consider wall decals that you can peel off once the child is older, or if you end up renovating the room!

Fun furnishings

Children's furnishings are honestly the most fun to play around with. Look at your child's room as an opportunity to expand your creative freedom and have some fun!  Miniature chairs in wild colours and textiles, various table shapes and sizes and even miniature tee-pees as seen here, are all great items for a children's room.

The whimsical bed will add to this atmosphere, as will the furnishings you choose.  For best results we suggest you look at flea markets, second-hand stores and vintage stores for used children's toys and furnishings that have a vintage touch.  Once you've found items you like at an affordable price, take them home and add personal touches to them by hand-painting them or changing the fabric for a fresh, new look!

Inspirational toys

Toys are central objects in most children's lives. Whether they're handed down, handmade or hand-selected—they offer your child bright insight into their future world. Toys that provide inspiration don't always have to be the most-expensive or smart toys with electronic parts!  Some of the most inspirational children's toys are the most simple—encouraging your child to be creative.

We suggest toys that are similar to the ones pictured here. They are bright in colour, yet expose the primary material of wood—making your child appreciate that toys (just like people) come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Just as you can find great furnishings in vintage or second-hand shops, you can also find great toys! Make sure when purchasing these toys that you're properly disinfecting and cleaning them and also take some time to bring them back to life, whether it's adding a new battery, or a fresh lick of paint.

Unique items

We know that your child's room will be unique and one-of-a-kind by the time you're finished with it—but you can always add that one special item, or items, to make it purely representative of you, and everything you wish your child to know and appreciate.  For our unique item, we chose educational graphic prints that are quite  minimalist in nature.

Every item in your child's room should be interactive, pushing them towards an exploratory nature and curiosity for life.  This graphic print, representing a minimalist abstraction of the alphabet is a perfect piece! What better way to teach your child reading and writing then making them see that there is always more than one way to read between the lines! Educational graphic prints are available wherever you might look, but we suggest you consider local artists or unique online shops that have your child's heart in mind!
