When we set out to create a better system of organisation in the home, some things are easy. Books get stacked onto shelves, clothes go folded into drawers, and cookware gets arranged in the cabinet. The real pitfalls are those odds and ends that don’t quite fit because of their shapes and sizes. In the kitchen, this is often the case with pots and pans. Shoes and extra linens might pose this problem elsewhere in the home. Luckily, there are plenty of different tools and containers out there for neatly storing these items, but what about hats?

Hats are bulky and often fragile. They take up a lot of space, too. Most of us have a favourite hat or two as well as some that are essential for bearing the elements. We need hats in our lives, and often cherish them dearly. That’s why today on homify, we will be exploring how you can store your hats safely or even put them on display.

Simple hooks on the wall

One of the most basic and budget friendly ways you can store hats is by installing some simple hooks on the wall. These hooks are versatile. As we can see by this example by Loaf, you can store other items on the hooks as well. Therefore, this option is ideal for the hats you wear most often. You can simply hang the hat amidst the jackets and bags you’re most likely to take with you as you leave the house.

A set of wall hooks attached to a panel goes nicely near the door or in a minimalist bedroom. If you’d like to kick this technique up a notch, opt for a bar with fancier S-curve hooks instead.

Store in original boxes

For those more decorative hats that you only wear on special occasions, hold onto the boxes they came in! Hatboxes themselves are often ornamental, and they can do a lot to enhance the look of your room especially if you’re going for a daintier, vintage feel.

Hatboxes are usually made of durable cardboard, and they are printed with all sorts of pretty designs. Plus, hatboxes are specifically formulated for keeping your hats safe. Thus, they are the perfect receptacle for storing most hats long term. Simply place them on the top shelf of the closet to keep them out of reach or set them on a dresser for decoration. You can even stack hatboxes to maximise vertical space like we can see in this beautifully organised walk-in closet.

Store in the cube box

While this idea might sound nice, it is totally possible that the boxes your hats came in are already long gone. Further, lots of hats today don’t come in a pretty box at all. Fortunately, you can easily substitute with a cube box made of canvas material or plastic.

These boxes will work just as effectively—if not more in the case of the latter if you’re looking to store the hats long term to protect them from pests. Plus, many hats are not actually round, so the cube shape will accommodate them better. As this example illustrates, you can keep the cube boxes in the same places as you would keep hats stored in their original boxes.

Versatile hat tree

Another option that will keep your hats handy is to opt for a versatile hat tree. Much like a traditional coat rack, the hat tree comes with pegs specifically intended for hanging hats.

Hat trees might seem like a pretty old-school fixture for the home, but there are actually lots of variations on the traditional look like this cool, angular hat tree that leans against the wall. Further, hat trees are great for hanging coats, jackets, and bags in a way that also maximises vertical space. Consider keeping a hat tree near the door or in your bedroom just as you would with a coat rack.

With rope and clips

An even simpler option than the hat tree or rack with hooks is to go with a simple rope and clips. This option is completely DIY, which allows you to personalise it to your liking in terms of size and materials. In fact, this look goes beautifully in a multitude of different interior styles depending on the materials you choose.

Try twine with clothespins for a rustic look, or black wire with metal clips for an industrial style. You can choose to save space and vertically orient the rope with clips as pictured here, or you can hang it horizontally across the wall for better display.

Go artistic!

Finally, there is always room to experiment with different mechanisms for storing hats that are decorative in and of themselves. In this regard, there’s really no limit to what you can do. For example, taking a twisted branch and attaching some hooks to it like we can see here will provide a rustic means of hanging the hats. Alternatively, you could try an artistically shaped piece of metal with hooks on it for a more modern feel. Really, if you can dream it, you can do it with the right base and material for hooks. This is a great DIY project for adding some personal touches to your entryway or bedroom.
