Wouldn’t it be lovely if we gained additional space whenever we purchased more stuff, especially clothing? Just imagine arriving home with your newly bought fashion essentials just to discover your closet / wardrobe magically expanded itself! Sadly, reality doesn’t work like this. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t get creative with your storage.

Today, we are taking a look at some open-closet designs to free up legroom while also ensuring a neat and stylish look for your bedroom / dressing room

1. The colour code

With an open closet, all your fashionables become part of your room’s décor. And since everything is visible, try and organise your clothes per colour or size. For the hangers, stick to the same style and colour for consistency.

2. Use the walls for your closet

Use whatever little space you have on your walls to turn your open closet into a new wall. This will ensure you have more space to work with, as well as make your room (whether it’s your dressing room or bedroom) look bigger and neater.

3. Opt for modular designs

Got some DIY muscles you’ve been dying to stretch? Thankfully, modular closets are one of the easier DIY projects available.

Modular closets are pure genius as they allow you to assemble them in whichever way you see fit to fill up that empty space. Ready-to-assemble models are available at most hardware stores, or you can opt to create your own with pipes, boxes, or shelves. Or, if you have the perfect space available for your new open-closet design, pick one that’s already made.

Just remember that you don’t want the space to look cramped or messy, which is why you need to measure the area beforehand to ensure the finished design fits in perfectly.

4. Mobile racks for an easy alternative

Why overcomplicate your life? If you’re not in the mood for any major renovations, then simply get yourself one of those mobile racks to shove into the corner and consider this problem solved.

Thankfully, there is a myriad of designs and models to consider, regardless of your bedroom / dressing room’s style or size.

5. Get creative with piping

Consider getting yourself some pipes at the hardware store for your new open-closet design. Not only are they a more affordable option, but they are also available in just about any material you can choose, thus ensuring the final design complements that style you’ve been dreaming about. Use these to create racks for hanging your clothes, or opt to design some shelves – your choice!

6. Experiment with hanging / wall-mounted racks

As already mentioned, it’s always a great idea to see what you can do with your available wall space. And when thinking of making bare walls more functional for storage, especially near the ceiling, hanging racks come to mind!

But here you need to ensure that the hangers are sturdy enough to carry whatever you want it to carry, whether it’s 5 different handbags or heavy clothing. Speaking of which, also make sure that you don’t hang too much stuff on those racks, as it can very easily lead to a cluttered look for your open closet.

7. Reuse old stuff

Of course budget should always be considered. Thus, if you don’t want to spend too much on your open closet, how about reusing old stuff to assemble it? Here’s your chance to get really creative, such as hanging an old wooden ladder from the roof, or using two with a wooden tube for a rack.

We especially love this idea of using two ladders (one with its rungs removed) to become a (nearly) full-length mirror!
