As one of the most prominent cities of our time, New York requires little introduction. Greenwich Street is located in one of the fashionable areas of the city. Famous artist Thomas Cole and author Edgar Allan Poe once spend some time in the neighbouring areas of Greenwich Street. But this part of the town is a far cry from what it was two centuries ago.

For the past few decades, New York has become notorious for an acute scarcity of comfortable living quarters. Those who are newly setting up their bases in places like Kuala Lumpur and Kota Bharu will have some experience of this problem. Finding enough living space in a glamorous location like this is even more difficult. Thankfully the owners of the this city apartment were able to locate and buy a reasonably sized apartment in a prime location.

Studio Esnal’s commendable efforts turned this space into a gracefully decorated home. So, brace yourself and get ready to see a strikingly beautiful urban apartment. The credit for the images goes to Miguel de Guzmán from ImagenSubliminal.

Overview of the project

This loft apartment occupies the top floor of a historical building close to Hudson River Park. It was once built as a storehouse for canned Worcestershire sauce!

Its industrial structure has been renovated to create a comfortable apartment with a living area of 1300 sq feet—about 121 sq metres. The apartment reflects many of the design choices of the small family owning this space and some of the ingenious solutions of the architect.

Living room

The open plan living room is set up between the kitchen and a dining parlour. A stylish sofa bed occupies the space. Transparent plexiglass coffee tables perform their tasks without creating any sense of clutter. A glimpse of the building’s industrial past is noticeable here.

The exposed air conditioning ductwork has been painted white with colourful insertions to give a cheery feel to the interior. A fully operable skylight installation deludes the space with sunlight during daytime.

Kitchen

The floating kitchen boasts of a simple décor. It is arranged against a mobile wall panel, and the typical bulky kitchen island has been replaced with a large table. Extensive use of stainless steel can be observed in this space. The all-white cabinet and other storage units feel striking against the dark grey background.

Oak flooring introduces a sense of warmth. You can also catch glimpses of a small library set up in the hallway behind the kitchen. More skylight installations help to brighten up this area, too.

Dining room

The dining room is decorated with a large dining table and a set of very fashionable chairs. This rather oblong space is brightened up with ceiling mounted lighting fixtures. A number of modern paintings and illustrations adorn one of the walls.

To create a genial atmosphere, this part of the apartment uses oak flooring as well. Non-slip wood flooring is also best for homes with toddlers.

Kid’s room

The kid’s room is spacious and minimally decorated. It has elaborate arrangements for storage in a wall mounted cabinet. Except for this and a small cot, this room does not have any other piece of furniture at all. Installing skylight brightens up its interior.

Like the rest of the apartment, the walls and ceiling wear an all white look. Simple decorative items and paintings embellish this tiny room.

Bedroom

The bedrooms exhibits a similarly unfussy décor. This one, decorated with a simple cot and a simpler nightstand, is one of the two bedrooms that exists in this small space.

Small wall mounted bookshelves offset some of the storage requirements. Table lamps, ceiling mounted task lighting and single hung windows prove to be sufficient in lighting up this small but sweet room.

Bathroom

Take your cue from this space to design the interior of your small bathroom with the bare minimum! The all white interior makes it look neat and tidy. Vanity units have been replaced with a sink with a shelf underneath. The shower area is separated using a glass panel, and heated tower bars have been installed on the wall. A single hung window and skylight give this tiny bathroom a roomy feel, and it echoes the light and airy vibe that permeates the whole of this hip NY home.
