This historic two floor villa in France has been redone with a contemporary makeover, combining an old world feel with modern appliances and the innate elegance of wood-worked furnishings.

The whole home breathes fresh and calm, maximising a medium-sized space using minimalist design, picture windows, French doors and imposing arches. Let's begin with the first thing you see upon entering: the simple yet grandiose staircase…

The spacious staircase

Usually, old European villas have super narrow staircases, but not so at Villa Gassin. This staircase is the jewel of the villa—sumptuously wide, and the slight bend as you ascend is covert, giving the upstairs boudoir more privacy. The steps have been made using fine European pine wood, which is a perfect choice of material since this high-quality wood doesn't shrink or swell, and the white paint on the inner steps gives it a classic and clean finish.

The grand, floor-to-ceiling glass French doors open things up, bringing the living room into the surrounding landscape with true tranquility and style.

A most private place

With a sloped, timber-butressed ceiling, a fabulous view and plenty of space, it'll be tough deciding which of this villa's bedrooms you prefer stylistically. The designers have replaced the metal patio doors of the downstairs bedroom here with white wood balcony doors, because, yes, that's a balcony right there!

The high point of this bedroom is its privacy, set off high beyond that big staircase, it wouldn't be difficult to forget the world in here.

Rec-tac-u-lar!

With plenty of sunlight, the appliances in the upstairs bathroom feature around rectangular shaping—from the sinks to the mirrors, to the enormous, full-length mirror—but still provide double sinks and handsome carpentry.

Great views

Here we have a great shot of the original ceiling timber beams, that provide structural support throughout the villa. The original knottiness of the beams makes for a truly beautiful contrast with the rest of the villa's smooth, unmarked surfaces.

This picture also showcases the view: a prepossessing, tree-dotted landscape framed by large, arched, charcoal glass doors. The two-sided fireplace tops the room—easy to imagine the cosy ambience of these rooms on a cold evening in the French countryside.

Bathe naturally

Again the material that really gives this villa its class is the wood. We see in this downstairs master bathroom, both the wood floors and the basin's cabinetry feature lightly finished woods that have wisely been left alone for the most part, letting the natural beauty of the wood shine, gnarls and all.

The knobby woods are complimented by the natural shape of the circular mirrors, and by the big, transparent glass shower, which features a shower head that mimics standing beneath a warm rainstorm. This last bathroom really caps the sophisticated modern design of this villa.

If you're as big a fan of quality wooden carpentry, we recommend checking out Von Mann Architektur Gmbh's Casa Cochetta.
