A major house renovation located at Putra Heights, Selangor, Malaysia, aimed to transform a typical intermediate linked house to a modern rustic style home.

Putra Heights is in fact a quiet and pleasant, low density residential township, a beautiful locale enveloped by Subang Jaya, USJ, Puchong, Shah Alam, Klang and Petaling Jaya. Strategically located just a short distance away from key city centres, various matured township and airports, it is well connected by a network of highways and LRT stations.

The owner felt pleased staying here since 2010, therefore, decided to have a major make-over to accommodate the future growing needs. The house was 60% demolished and rebuilt with an extra floor, a complete revamp from a deep enclosed setting to an opened, bright and well ventilated living condition.

The facade design features a tall reddish brick feature wall overlooking a tiny garden. The bricks are arranged and spaced in perpendicular stacking manner, bringing natural light and fresh air in, acting as effective privacy screen and security barrier without need to install conventional metal grille that may diminish the house aesthetic. Having the concrete and lightweight blocks incorporated, the construction represents an amiable mix of strength and gentleness, creating very catchy visual effects to the frontage.

The living hall is enhanced with double-volumed space and an opened courtyard next to it, inviting volume with high ceiling and high glazed door that floods the space with natural light. Again, the visual impact of bricks is carried into the interior with the japanese bamboos planted, making the dry kitchen looks organic. The galley layout is adopted to wet kitchen, as matter of fact, is efficient and easy to manoeuvre through. The combination of black rectangular-shaped wall tiles, vintage-looked floor tiles, matt black cabinets and bare concrete top further emphasise the rustic feel of the house.

Two courtyards are introduced into interior, offering sense of serenity that can bring a tremendous pleasure to the home users. In conjunction with landscaping, the areas seem like a private oasis protected from neighbours with a patch of ground and some sky that allows connection to the outdoors. The living spaces including bedrooms wrap around the courtyards, visually connected through the glazed windows, well lighted naturally.

The powder room and bathrooms are sleek and modern. The elegant triangular-shaped black mosaics, grey-coloured skim coat and bare concrete blended harmoniously, bringing the industrial chic to the space. The semi-opened shower inviting cool air and light.

An extra floor is added to the original 2-storey house, housing the guest rooms, study area and balcony. The staircase connecting it, is made of perforated metal sheet complemented with sleek  metal railing, representing the style of industrial chic. The balcony garden is sunny and bright, complimented by timber floor decking and Zen like landscape, making it a cozy space for evening hang around. Besides the balcony, the greenery is introduced at other pocket spaces throughout the whole house, enlivens the living atmosphere and human spirit.
