FLOOR_STORY founder Simon Goff met textile designer Kangan Arora several years ago and they immediately shared a passion for travelling, design and textiles.
Chosen as one of ‘20 names to know in 2014’ by Elle India magazine, Kangan established her studio in 2011 following in the footsteps of her family heritage, of which textiles have been a part for 100 years. With a passion for local craft and materials, Kangan usually combines screen-printing with traditional hand embroidery, applique and quilting.
Kangan finds inspiration in the bold, kitsch objects and places of day-to-day life in India; from graphics on trucks and rickshaws, Bollywood posters, holy cows, a carnival of kites, to the ever curious characters in government offices, local markets and bazaars.
With Simon long believing Kangan’s designs would translate perfectly to rugs, collaboration has seen three striking pieces for FLOOR_STORY created; bold patterns are inspired by a kaleidoscopic array of circus tents and the excitement of an Indian kite-flying festival.
Kangan's bold, bright textiles and cinematic photography capture the beauty and chaos of life in the Indian subcontinent. Her ability to make her designs depict the many curious characters and remarkable sights and scenes encountered on her travels, will leave a lasting impression.
