Casa Rösch

Casa Rösch—Rebuild/Renovation Anzonico, Ticino, Switzerland 2015
An old ruin of a house has been transformed into a family home. The concept was to maintain the character of the old building by leaving the existing structure where possible and only replacing what was damaged or destroyed with similar, all natural materials. The entrance areas (corridor, bathroom, kitchen) of the ground floor are designed with dark materials—bathroom with natural stone and timber, kitchen and corridor with dark timber panels—to create minimum contrast between the original, dark timber façade and the renovated interior and to maintain a cosy entrance and kitchen fire place like traditional houses from the region.

In contrast, the upstairs has been designed to be an open space, flooded with light and offering stunning views of the Leventina Valley. The house has five bedrooms, one living room, two bathrooms, 2 kitchens, 3 cellars (2 vault), a two-storey studio, extension building and two terraces. A damaged, leaky roof meant water, over the course of many years, had destroyed most of the interior. Flooring, interior walls, electricity and plumbing have all been redone, leaving only the outer shell of the existing building. Timber stud walls were erected from the inside to provide structural strength to the outer shell and a new roof was constructed.

The whole house has been insulated to the highest standards to conserve heat
