Doors: Design ideas, inspiration & pictures

Doors are elements that allow movement and provide security between two physically separated spaces. Depending upon the availability of material and the nature of use, doors have been fabricated from wood, metal, glass, as well as plastic. Typically a door measures 3’x7’ keeping in mind the nature of space and ergonomics. However, this is not a standard feature and doors can be built in shapes and sizes of varying type mainly dedicated by the user requirements. A door assembly usually consists of the main solid panel supported on hinges or pivots and kept secured by means of a locking system. Additionally, doors also feature elements such as door closers, handles, peepholes, vision windows, drop down seals, etc. depending upon the position of the door and nature of use. Further, doors can be designed to be fire resistant, acoustically efficient, as well as temperature insulated by doing certain tweaks and additions in the overall design.

What are the typical materials used to fabricate a door?

Wood has been the oldest and still remains the most popular material for fabricating doors. Wooden doors are used on both,  the interiors as well as on the front and allow the possibility of intricate design on its surface. On a whole, wooden doors are easier to work with and it is not difficult to find craftsmen that are familiar with the material. Abundance of raw material and readily available labour makes wooden doors one of the cheapest and value for money products.

Mild steel or MS is the commonly used steel type for fabricating doors. Steel doors offer better resistance to natural wear and tear and are comparatively heavier than wooden doors. These doors are often without any ornamentation and are mostly installed in commercial or storage spaces. Owing to specialized construction mechanisms, steel doors tend to be more expensive than wooden doors.

Glass is one of the most sought after materials for fabricating doors, especially in the residential and commercial spaces. These doors look far sleeker and appealing than most of doors built from other materials. Depending upon the user requirement and nature of space, users can choose from a variety of glass types such as, low-e, extra clear, toughened, or laminated glass, etc. each of these types have special features that can be combined to achieve desired results. Glass door manufacturers are widely spread and can easily customize the door according to your opening size and budgets.

Besides mild steel, aluminium too is a very popular metal choice for fabricating doors. Aluminium doors are usually manufactured with factory made sections which are usually assembled on site according to the opening size. Most of the times, aluminium doors are combined with glass panels to create interesting designs as well as achieve faster production. Aluminium doors are relatively cheaper and one can easily find vendors and installers in even semi-urban and rural areas.

What are the different types of door hardware?

Hinges are one of the most basic of door elements since they are the ones that support the door and allow the swing motion. Hinges can be designed to allow a 90 degree swing or even a complete 180 degree swing depending upon the user requirement. Hinges can be the typical pin hinges that are installed on the sides with 2 or 3 on each side depending upon the weight of the door. Alternatively, you can also opt for offset hinges or floor hinges depending upon the material of the door or any possible cladding on the door panel.

Since security is one of the prime functions of any door, locks are one of the most essential factors that are associated with access control. Locks could be the normal mortise lock that can be operated with a key or they could be the modern electromagnetic locks that can be operated with access card readers in case of security doors. For further security, you can also opt for tower bolts that can be installed on the top as well as on the bottom of the door frame.

Closers are hardware that assists in bringing the door automatically to its original position after it is opened.  Door closers are usually installed on the top frame of the door and can be exposed or concealed in the door depending upon the user requirements.

Although they might seem insignificant, sealants play a major role in keeping away sound, difference in temperature and to an extent also help in improving fire resistance.

How much time does it take to install a door?

Installation of doors depend upon multiple factors, primary amongst them are size of door, material whether steel, wood, etc, quality and number of workmen, and availability of materials. Naturally, if a door has to be installed in an under construction building, it is a much faster process since the holdfasts that are embedded in the wall are easy to work with. However in the case of reinstalling a door, it takes longer since the carpenters have to not only remove the door panel but also the door frame which involves taking out the holdfasts embedded into the wall. However considering typical estimates, reinstalling a normal 3’x7’ wooden door might take about 3-5 hours for a team of 2 while a larger 6’x9’ metal door might take upto a whole day for a team of 3. Further, installing the locks can take an estimated time of around 30mins to an hour depending upon its type and material of the door panel.
